From Heidi Henderson, Professor of Dance:

Dear Prospective Student,

I am pleased to learn that you are interested in the Dance Department at Connecticut College. I welcome you to our community. I know you will find our department to be one of the finest professional and supportive dance environments within a liberal arts setting. Our highly qualified, inspirational and attentive faculty members work closely with the students to provide an intensive dancing and learning experience. In addition, numerous guest artists from New York City and beyond provide invaluable performance opportunities and state-of-the-art teaching during their residencies here. David Dorfman Dance, is the company-in-residence at the College. David’s New York-based company spends several weeks at the college each year working with student dancers, performing repertory, rehearsing new work and collaborating with the college as a whole.

Our students choreograph and perform in four or more concerts each year. In 2017, dance major Rachael Lieblein-Jurbala's '19 work, ...and I will never, ever let you down. was chosen to be performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for the 2018 National College Dance Festival's Gala Performance. Adjudicators said of the dance: “ …and I will never, ever let you down. is a sophisticated and relevant statement in a charged political moment, that utilizes the power of both subtle and not-so-subtle gesture. It immediately and thoroughly immerses the viewer in the world it creates, revealing its social commentary through masterful layering."

Information sessions and classes will be held during all campus visit days on Monday, October 11, 2021 and Monday, November 8, 2021 at Connecticut College. We do call these days “auditions,” but we believe that you are auditioning us as much as we are you. The group of prospective students, alongside current students and faculty, will take a technique class that includes modern, improvisation, at least one of our African forms, and ballet. You will show a short solo (1-2 minutes), either of your own or another’s choreography. What we hope to see is that you love to dance. After the audition, we will write to admissions on your behalf. For further information please visit the Dance Department website at

We hope you will visit us at the College. A visit provides an excellent opportunity for you to become acquainted with our college environment and the specifics of our unique department. We are happy to meet with you, give you a tour, and answer any questions you might have concerning life at Connecticut College. We can also put you in touch with a current dance major to provide you with more insights from a student perspective. If you’d like to schedule a dance audition please email us at

We hope to dance with you soon.
