Freshman Tara Gabelman has been named Rookie of the Week by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA). In the opening week of the women's basketball season, Gabelman, a native of Irvington, N.Y., averaged 19.3 points and 10.3 rebounds. She recorded double-doubles in two of her first three games for the Camels, making 52.4 percent of her shots from the floor and nearly 78 percent of her free throw attempts.

"Tara has infused our program with a tough, physical scoring presence up front," head coach Brian Wilson said. "It has been an absolute delight coaching her and watching her develop into a dominant force. She is a tremendous person; her coaches and teammates all love being around her every day."

Gabelman was named to the 2010 Brandeis University Women's Basketball Judges Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Camels to a 66-60 victory over Springfield College Nov. 21. She scored 22 points and recorded 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Two days later, she had 25 points and 12 rebounds in the Camel's 75-52 triumph over Nichols College.

Junior Jennifer Shinall of Redding, Conn., was also honored on NEWBA's Weekly Honor Roll. In the first four games of the season, Shinall averaged 19.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 2.3 assists.

"Jennifer played virtually flawless basketball during the first week of the season," Wilson said. "She plays the game as hard, and with as much passion, as any player I have ever coached."

The Camels (2-4) will travel to West Hartford to take on St. Josephs College Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m.
