Empty Bowls helping to end hunger

On May 10, Connecticut College will host a local event for Empty Bowls, an international grassroots effort to end hunger, and the community is invited to take part. Faculty, staff and students will create handcrafted ceramic bowls, which guests can purchase to use during a light meal served picnic-style on campus. The bowls can then serve as a "reminder of all the empty bowls in the world," according to Imagine Render, the non-profit organization which started the event.

This is the second year the College has participated. "Last year's event was a great success and students contributed their time to make beautiful and unique glazed ceramic bowls of all kinds and sizes," said Denise Pelletier, associate professor of art, who is overseeing the College's effort. "Again this year, students are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to use their creativity to contribute to those in need in the local community. This grassroots project using 'many hands' has been a great way for students to learn about art as activism, and to participate in community engaged art practice."

Tickets are $10 and all proceeds go to the New London Food Bank. They can be purchased by contacting Colleen Bunn at colleen.bunn@conncoll.edu or 860-439-5275. The Empty Bowls dinner will begin at 6 p.m. on Larrabee Green, across from the College Center at Crozier-Williams. In case of rain, the event will be held in Ernst Common Room in Blaustein Humanities Center.
