Camel Heard choral group in first stand-alone concert on April 3
The Connecticut College choral group Camel Heard, in its first stand-alone concert, will present Schubert's "Mass No. 2 in G" and other short works in Harkness Chapel on Sunday, April 3, from 4-5 p.m. Tickets are $5 general admission, $3 for students and seniors, available at the door.
Director of choral activities Wendy Moy said, “This concert is significant in that it is the first stand-alone concert for Camel Heard. The Schubert “Mass in G” was chosen to complement the Schubertiade concert that the faculty performed in January and the music history courses that we are teaching this term. In addition, it is a beautiful masterwork that is well-written for the voice.”
Moy said that this is the first year that the music department has been able to offer a comprehensive choral program at Connecticut College, which now has a large "town and gown" choir called the Chorale and the Camel Heard. Both are auditioned ensembles, but Camel Heard has a more vigorous audition process and all students must be able to read music.
Students in Camel Heard include sopranos Molly Brown ‘18 and Stephanie Foster '18; altos Camille Iorio ’19, Dara Feldman '18 and Rachel Glasser '19; tenors Sam Girioni '19. Gerard Lanzano '17 and Christian Vazquez '19, and singing bass are Justin Winokur '18 and Connor Wu '17.
Music faculty performing in Mass No. 2 in G include baritone Maksim Ivanov, soprano Jurate Svedaite Waller, and Patrice Newman, pianist, all from Connecticut College, and tenor Gene Stenger from Yale University.
In addition to the Mass in G, German art songs will be sung by Connecticut College music faculty. Ivanov, baritone, will sing Ave Maria and Litanei by Schubert, and Waller will perform Abendempfindung by Mozart, Zueignung by Strauss and Widmung by Schumann.
