onStage presents contemporary string quartet ETHEL, with Native American flutist Robert Mirabal: ‘The River’ Nov. 11
onStage at Connecticut College presents the pioneering contemporary string quartet ETHEL, in concert with Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, on Friday, Nov. 11, in Evans Hall at 7:30 p.m. ETHEL is touring its acclaimed program, “The River,” a cross-cultural concert experience inspired by water, continuing a deeply successful nine-year collaboration with Mirabal, a Native American musician, instrument builder and three-time GRAMMY® Award winner.
The audience will be immersed in a flow of music, narrative and ritual, evoking timeless Native American traditions through contemporary musical artistry. At the heart of ETHEL is a quest for a common creative expression that is forged in the celebration of community. As cultural and musical “pollinators,” the quartet brings its collaborative discoveries to audiences through multi-dimensional musical repertoire and community engagement.
Founded in 1998 and based in New York City, ETHEL comprises Ralph Farris (viola), Kip Jones (violin) Dorothy Lawson (cello) and Corin Lee (violin). Maintaining a traditional life, keeping the centuries-old customs of the Taos Pueblo people, Robert Mirabal has been described as a Native American “Renaissance man” – musician, composer, painter, master craftsman, poet, actor, screenwriter, horseman and farmer – and he travels extensively playing his music all over the world.
