International Women's Day, March 8

International Women's Day, March 8

On Wednesday, March 8, Connecticut College will join the rest of the United States and many nations around the world in observing International Women's Day. This observance takes place annually to celebrate the many achievements of women and to advocate for greater gender equity in societies across the globe.

Some of the organizers of the recent Women's March on Washington are continuing to raise awareness by calling for "A Day Without a Woman." This theme compels us to recognize the essential contributions made by women in our daily lives.

Connecticut College was founded in 1911 as the first institution in the state dedicated to providing a four-year liberal arts degree for women. For us, then, the story is quite clear: There would be no Conn without women. This is the central idea in a series of posters designed by the division of institutional equity and inclusion that will be displayed throughout campus this week.

Connecticut College has recognized the intellectual, social, economic, cultural and political contributions of women to society from our founding through the present-day. We are taking the opportunity of International Women's Day to affirm that women students, staff, faculty, trustees, alumnae, parents and friends are vital to the life—and success—of the College.

An ad-hoc planning committee of faculty, staff and students has organized several events on March 8 commemorating this day:
