The role of faculty
It takes a community to change a culture; faculty members have an important role to play. Faculty members are cooperative when a dean calls to request special arrangements for a student who must miss some classes: they do not ask for details, but make the necessary supportive measures. They are increasingly aware that some of their students may have experienced sexual violence, and that this should be taken into account during the presentation of course materials and classroom discussions.
When faculty members must miss a class for whatever reason, they can call on Nicole Powell, Director of Sexual Violence Education and Advocacy, to teach the class for that session; this provides an opportunity for students to learn more about College policies, procedures and resources, and to have their questions about sexual misconduct, sexual misconduct prevention, and/or Green Dot bystander intervention answered.
Faculty members are sometimes the most trusted advisers their students have: they are being trained to serve as guides to appropriate resources when a student wishes to talk to them about a traumatizing sexual experience (please note that faculty members are responsible employees and must report any knowledge that have about sexual misconduct incidents).
